Colorado has announced the signing of Peruvian international striker Waldir Saenz. Saenz has played his entire career with Alianza Lima of the Peruvian first division, leading the league or finishing second in scoring in each of his five years with the club. Last season, he and fellow Rapids signee Marquinho led Alianza to the Peruvian championship. He has scored six goals in his last three games for Alianza, including four in a win over Municipal and one each in a pair of Libertadores Cup matches. “His goal-scoring record speaks for itself,” said Rapids coach Glenn Myernick. “To score that many goals on such a consistent basis is one of the most difficult things to accomplish in soccer, and we are very excited to have him complete what we feel is a very dangerous attack.” “What we have done now is taken two of the best players from one of the best teams in South America and plugged them into our lineup,” added Rapids GM Dan Counce. “This team just got very, very interesting.” Saenz, 24, joins the Rapids on a one-year loan agreement, where Colorado has the option after this season to purchase his contract and make him a permanent member of the Rapids. “I am very flattered that coach Myernick and the Rapids saw me and decided to make an effort to bring me here,” said Saenz. “Coming to a new team in a new country is very exciting, and I hope it won’t take long to fit right into the team.” Saenz is expected to make his debut this weekend when Colorado opens the season at Dallas.
