The USA and Austria are scoreless at halftime of their friendly match in Vienna. The U.S. played a solid half, keeping possession fairly well and creating more scoring opportunities. Austria appeared frustrated by the Americans’ 3-6-1 formation at times. Frankie Hejduk had a goal called back for offside in the 18th minute. Fine balls from Cobi Jones and Chad Deering had sprung Hejduk, who did a celebratory dance before realizing the strike had been disallowed. Seven minutes later, Ernie Stewart did well to put a long pass from Brian Maisonneuve just wide with a header. The U.S. back three of Eddie Pope, Mike Burns and sweeper Thomas Dooley appeared composed. Austria’s best opportunity came in the 42nd minute, when Harald Cerny’s cross found for Ivica Vastic came dangerously close to yielding a high-percentage shot before Kasey Keller broke up the play and the ball was cleared. Brian Maisonneuve has played very well for the U.S., while striker David Wagner has not done as well holding the ball as might have been hoped. One yellow card was issued — to Austria’s Vastic in the 34th minute. It is expected that Brian McBride and Preki Radosavljevic will both see playing time in the second half.
