The following are excerpts from U.S. national team coach Steve Sampson’s interview with Austrian media April 20 in Vienna. Austria hosts the United States April 22 at the Ernst Happel Stadium. The game is scheduled to be broadcast live on Fox Sports World and Fox Sports Americas at 2:30 pm. ET, as well as the following Fox affiliates: Fox Sports Arizona, Fox Sports Bay Area, Fox Sports Chicago, Fox Sports Detroit, Fox Sports New England, Fox Sports New York, Fox Sports Ohio (both Cleveland and Cincinnati versions), Fox Sports Rocky Mountain, Fox Sports South, Fox Sports West 2, Sunshine Network. On Wednesday’s match against Austria… “My expectations are for the team to play well. A team can win a match but play poorly and not make progress towards the World Cup, or a team can lose a match yet play well and make progress. The most important thing is not necessarily the result, but the way in which we play… There will be some experimentation, just like with Austria. We will be looking for a combination of players to play well together. We are looking for depth in the World Cup team. You don’t just play with 11 players in a World Cup. You must rely on 16-18 players that can play.” On the Austrian team… “Austria is a team that has a lot of confidence. They have proved that they are a very good team. It seems their players believe they can accomplish some things in the World Cup.” When suggested that the U.S. are not favored to advance to the second round in France… “On paper all the facts state that Germany and Yugoslavia will make it through from our group. When we played in the Copa America in 1995, everyone thought that Argentina and Chile or Bolivia would go forward, and we finished first in the group. In the 1994 World Cup, everyone thought Romania and Colombia would be the two teams to advance. I believe we don’t have the respect of the European teams, but it’s very important for us to gain this respect. The only way to do that is by beating European nations in Europe.” On the future of the U.S. National Team… “In 10-15 years, the United States will win a World Cup… no question. If you expose American players to the high level of play in South America and in Europe, the Americans will adapt and eventually be able to compete and beat the best teams in the world. It’s the American society. Give Americans some time and if they want to do something they will eventually do it. We are not satisfied with being anything less than a champion. This is the mentality of the best soccer-playing nations in the world. We have the same mentality but we don’t have the experience.” On the differences between this team and the 1994 team… “The main difference is that this team will play to win as opposed to playing not to lose. There is a big difference, psychologically, between the two.”
