U.S. national team coach Steve Sampson named Tab Ramos to the 1998 U.S. World Cup squad May 20. Ramos, one of the country’s most experienced players, joins Marcelo Balboa and Eric Wynalda in making their third World Cup appearance — a U.S. soccer record. “Tab, although hampered by injuries, has been one of the most exciting players ever to put on a U.S. national team jersey,” said Sampson. “He represents what most Americans want to see in a player. I’m very happy to see him going to France.” Ramos has started every World Cup game the U.S. has played in the last eight years. At the moment, one spot remains available on the American roster. Sampson has been holding it for Frenchman David Regis, who is close to gaining his citizenship.
