Last test The United States will play a 90-minute closed-door scrimmage against Gueugnon, a Second Division French professional team, Tuesday, June 8, its last competition before opening the World Cup against Germany June 15. Two or three question marks U.S. head coach Steve Sampson said he is still undecided on “two or three positions” and intends to use the scrimmage to help decide. “A lot will depend on the current form of certain players,” Sampson said. “Today was the first day that we had all 22 players train 100 percent. This will make my decision on starters that much more difficult.” Hejduk progresses Midfielder Frankie Hejduk performed well in his individual training session last night, according to Sampson. “Frankie worked on driving in crosses from the wing at speed, and he hit a number of quality passes,” said Sampson. “He has worked very hard to get to this point. I’m delighted with his progress.” Open vs. Closed Training The U.S. team has filled its FIFA requirement for open training sessions prior to the June 15 match. FIFA requires each team to open at least two training sessions five days out from June 10. The U.S. has opened three full sessions and one partial one to this point. The remaining U.S. training sessions leading up to June 15 will be closed. Sampson will open the first 10 minutes of some training sessions. The next open session will be June 16 at Saint-Jean D’Ardieres at 6:30 p.m. Soccer Tennis Sampson’s soccer tennis tournament is well underway. After five games played the top teams are Agoos/Balboa, Moore/Reyna, McBride/Dooley, Pope/Preki and Friedel/Regis. The tournament consists of 11 teams of two, with each team playing everyone once (55 games in all).
