Juergen Klinsmann scored in the 65th minute to give Germany a 2-0 lead over the U.S. A ball bounced off of David Regis to a German player on the right side, and he played a fine ball to Klinsmann, who was one-on-one with Thomas Dooley towards the far post in the penalty box. The German captain beat Dooley to the ball and chested it down before beating Kasey Keller with a fine strike to the opposite corner of the goal. The addition of the speedy Frankie Hejduk had helped to spark the U.S. in the second half, as the U.S. picked up its game noticeably. In the 53rd minute, the U.S. created its best scoring chance by stringing several passes together, with David Regis taking a ball down the left side and sending an excellent cross into the box. Frankie Hejduk’s diving header forced a fine lunging save from Koepke, who knocked the ball to the side, and then blocked Claudio Reyna’s tight-angle rebound effort. German midfield maestro Thomas Haessler suffered a leg injury early on in the second half when Brian Maisonneuve appeared to step on his ankle. Dietmar Hamann replaced Haessler. Roy Wegerle came on for Eric Wynalda in the 64th minute, just before the German goal.Tab Ramos replaced Chad Deering in the 70th minute. Hejduk was booked in the 51st minute. Should he pick up another yellow in the first round, he will be suspended for one match.
