While the USA and coach Steve Sampson will be heading home after today’s loss to Yugoslavia, former U.S. international Fernando Clavijo is en route to France as an assistant coach for Nigeria. Bora Milutinovic, who has now guided four teams to the second round of a World Cup, has asked Clavijo to join the Nigerian staff to help prepare for the Super Eagles’ second-round match against Denmark. Clavijo, who served as an assistant coach with the U.S. Pro 40 Select team before taking the head coaching job with the expansion Florida Thundercats of the NPSL, knows Bora from USA ’94, when he played for the U.S. while Milutinovic was the Americans’ coach.
