For the first time in the tournament’s 85-year history, U.S. Soccer will stage the U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals as two doubleheaders being played concurrently. The four games are scheduled for Wednesday, July 22 at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas and Finley Stadium in Chattanooga, Tenn. In the Western bracket, the Chicago Fire meets the San Jose Clash at 6:00 p.m. (CT), and the defending Open Cup champion Dallas Burn plays the Nashville Metros at 8:30 p.m. at the Cotton Bowl. In the Eastern quarterfinal bracket, the Columbus Crew will take on the Miami Fusion and the NY/NJ MetroStars will battle the Tampa Bay Mutiny at Chattanooga’s Finley Stadium, with kickoff times slated for 6:00 and 8:30 p.m. (ET), respectively. “This is the next logical step for the U.S. Open Cup,” said U.S. Soccer Secretary General Hank Steinbrecher. “With the advent of Major League Soccer, the U.S. Open Cup has grown in stature, step-by-step, over the last few years. Hosting these games in doubleheader formats on predetermined dates helps alleviate scheduling concerns for the clubs involved, and makes the event that much more attractive to the fans.” Fans can purchase tickets for the matches at the Cotton Bowl by calling Ticketmaster in the Dallas area at 214/373-8000.
