The Netherlands and Brazil remain deadlocked 1-1 after the first period of extra time. A second 15-minute period will now be played. Brazil turned up its attack in extra time, as Roberto Carlos broke free on the left side of the box and fired a cross towards the center of the area that was well blocked by a Dutch defender in the second minute. Roberto Carlos continued to terrorize Holland on the left flank, as he broke free again a minute later and fired a cross that Van Der Sar blocked. The ball fell down towards Ronaldo, whose bicycle kick was headed for the goal but cleared off the line by Frank De Boer. Van Der Sar made an excellent save on Ronaldo’s 20-yard, right-footed blast moments later. Edgar Davids won a free kick for the Dutch in the sixth extra minute. Pierre Van Hooijdonk took the 30-yard kick and Taffarel made a diving save towards his right post. Later, Kluivert ran onto a beautiful long ball at the left corner of the box and his shot from about 13 yards had Taffarel beat but rolled just wide of the far post.
