Liverpool now looks likely to join the list of English clubs being sold to foreign investors, as Rick Parry, the club’s chief executive, has now entered into exclusive negotiations with Dubai International Capital (DIC) about a possible investment in the club. “This is the latest step on the road of finding the long-term investment that the club needs,” Parry said. “Already they have demonstrated a full understanding of, and respect for, the club’s heritage and values. We also believe they share our passion for success.” An understanding of the club’s “heritage and values” has almost become a stock component to these foreign investment statements. The Glazers said it with Manchester United last year, as did Eggert Magnusson a few weeks ago when his Icelandic consortium took over West Ham. The fact is, Liverpool needs an infusion of cash if it wants to compete with Chelsea and Manchester Untied. Arsenal might soon find itself in the same boat. DIC is the international arm of Dubai Holding, which owns scores of properties in real estate, entertainment and leisure. It’s a massive company that could provide Liverpool with the kind of cash that Chelsea enjoys if a full takeover, purported to be in the range of $890 million, was to take place.
