Manchester United came from behind to beat Benfica, 3-1, Wednesday on goals by Nemanja Vidic, Ryan Giggs and Louis Saha and win Group F ahead of Celtic, which had clinched a spot in the round of 16 two weeks earlier.
Arsenal and Porto finished with 11 points apiece atop Group G after their 0-0 draw in Lisbon. Porto’s Quaresma twice hit the same post in the second half, rattling the nerves of Gunner supporters. Arsenal would have exited with a loss in Oporto and a CSKA Moscow victory in Hamburg, where the Russian champion led until late in the game when it gave up two goals and lost, 3-2.
In the biggest surprise was in Milan, where French club Lille beat AC Milan, 2-0, on goals by Nigerian Peter Odemwingie and Ivory Coast midfielder Kader Keita and reached the last 16 for the first time. Coach Carlo Ancelotti said the Rossoneri, who had already clinched a berth in the round of 16, had never played so badly.
“We had few ideas, little clarity in our play and little determination — in fact little anything,” he said.
England’s representatives made Champions League history with all four finishing the group phase in first place. It is the first time that four clubs from the same country have all finished first in their respective groups.
The draw for the round of 16 will take place on Dec. 15.
