The NCAA Division III Women's Tournament continues this weekend with action at eight regional sites. Here's a look at the top five teams in the final NSCAA/adidas NCAA Division III rankings of the regular season.
1. TRINITY (TEXAS). Last year, Messiah won the D3 men's and women's titles. This year, Trinity's men and women both enter the postseason at No. 1 with hopes of duplicating Messiah's feat. The Tigers (16-0-1) have won 16 games in a row since opening with a 2-2 tie with Hardin-Simmons. They must travel to Tacoma, Wash., for the opening weekend of regional play. Trinity opens against Willamette Saturday; the winner faces the Puget Sound-Hardin-Simmons winner on Sunday.
2. CALVIN. At 20-0-0, the Knights are the only unbeaten and untied team in the D3 tournament. They've only allowed five goals all season. On the offensive end, Jill Capel and Sarah Weesies lead Calvin with 11 goals apiece. It opens play in the second round against Kenton on Saturday.
3. WESTERN CONN. STATE. The Colonials (19-1-1) open tournament play Saturday night when they host Western New England in the first game of a doubleheader. Sophomore Catherine Nathans, the Little East Offensive Player of the Year, has set a WestConn record this season with 21 goals.
4. UC SANTA CRUZ. The Lady Slugs (16-0-3) opened tournament play with a 3-0 win over Claremont on Wednesday. They take the nation's No. 2 defense into their second round game at Webster on Sunday. Goalie Katie Loomis came up big against Claremont five five saves, including a key stop early in the game.
5. COLLEGE OF NEW JERSEY. Last year's national runner-up (15-1-2) return to the D3 tournament for the 16th straight year. Dana DiBruno, who leads the Lions with 10 goals, was one of four all-New Jersey Athletic Conference picks along with Christine Mullin, Kristen Cubicciotti and Courtney Krol, the NJAC Defensive Player of the Year. TCNJ faces Villa Julie in the second round on Sunday.
