Top 25 teams William & Mary (No. 12) and BYU (No. 13) were both upset in women's conference tournament semifinals on Thursday night.
Fourth-seeded Old Dominion advanced to the CAA championship for the first time, topping top-seeded William & Mary, 6-5, on penalty kicks after the squads battled to a 1-1 tie at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex.
Senior Lauren Tupman was the hero in goal, stopping an attempt by Meredith Brown that would have allowed W&M to win the shootout after five rounds, then making a diving stop of Brittany Bode's attempt in the seventh round.
William & Mary jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Donna Mataya's goal in the seventh minute, but ODU dominated the rest of the action. Katie Watson missed a penalty kick, and the Monarchs had two shots go off the crossbar early in the second half before getting the equalizer in the 57th minute on Watson's team-leading 13th goal of the season.
The Tribe (16-1-3), who extended their unbeaten streak to 16 games, are expected to receive an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament. They were seventh nationally in the NCAA's latest RPI rankings released on Tuesday. ODU (16-4-1) will meet sixth-seeded James Madison, a 2-0 winner over UNC Wilmington, for the CAA title on Saturday.
Like W&M, BYU fell on penalties, dropping a 4-1 decision to UNLV (9-10-2) in the Mountain West semifinals after their game ended 0-0.
Freshman Alicia Lugo set the tone of the shootout, stopping BYU's first shooter, Andrea Willis, twice, the second time after she was ruled to have moved too quickly on the first stop. On BYU's second round, Lugo got a piece of Brooke Bowman's shot, which went off the crossbar. Meanwhile, the Rebels, the defending MWC champions, calmly converted their four attempts.
In the other semifinal, No. 10 Utah needed an overtime goal from Adele Letro, the MWC Offensive Player of the Year, to defeat New Mexico, 2-1.
