Fourth-seeded George Mason reached the CAA MenÆs Championship game for the first time since 2003, edging top-seeded Towson 5-4 on penalty kicks after the two squads battled to a 1-1 double-overtime tie in semifinal action Friday night at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex.
The Patriots (12-5-2) advance to SundayÆs title match against No. 2 seed Hofstra, which beat Old Dominion, 4-2.
Constantinos Christoudias scored two goals, and Michael Todd had a goal and two assists to lead the Pride, which is now 6-0 in tournament play since joining the CAA.
The tie against SMU snapped Towson's 10-game winning streak. Towson was ahead 3-1 in the penalty kick shootout, but Mason goalkeeper Sean Kelley made back-to-back saves which allowed the Patriots to draw even after five shooters.
