The draw for the U-20 World Cup, in Nigeria April 3-24, put the United States into Group E with Cameroon, Japan and England. Group E will play its games in the cities of Kano and Bauchi. “We’ve never been satisfied with just qualifying for this tournament,” said U.S. U-20 head coach Sigi Schmid from the tournament draw. “We feel confident in our own abilities, but also know that we will be facing three strong opponents in England, Japan and Cameroon. “U.S. Soccer has invested a great deal of effort and resources into this team, and we are going to do everything we can to prove ourselves. This team has been together on a regular basis for more than a year now and we’re all looking forward to playing in Nigeria.” The United States has reached six of the nine U-20 World Cups. Its best showing was a fourth-place finish in 1989 in Saudi Arabia under Coach Bob Gansler. It reached the second round two other times, in 1993 and 1997, losing in the round of 16.
