Both the U.S. U-21 women’s and U-18 girls’ national teams opened their European tour with wins over their German counterparts in chilly weather in Ebersberg, Germany. The U-21s rallied from a two-goal deficit with three strikes in the final 25 minutes for a 3-2 win. 1998 SA Freshman of the Year Mary Frances Monroe of UConn tallied the first American goal in the 65th minute off of an assist from North Carolina forward Meredith Florance. Santa Clara midfielder Aly Wagner, who has been training with the full U.S. national team at its residency camp in Florida, evened the match at two goals apiece in the 71st minute, and Clemson midfielder Beth Keller, who scored a goal on the first touch of her international debut against Finland in February, hit the winner for the U.S. eight minutes later. The U-18s won by a score of 1-0, with Veronica Zepeda scoring the game’s lone goal in the 67th minute off an assist from Christie Welsh. The two teams will face their Danish counterparts in Copenhagen on March 13 in the final game of the tour. March 10 in Ebersberg Germany U-21s 2 USA U-21s 3.
