Orlando Bueso, the 1998 NAIA Player of the Year, was the first player chosen in the A-League draft of collegiate soccer players held in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. on the same weekend as the Umbro Select College All-Star Classic. Bueso was chosen by the Richmond Kickers, who obtained the pick in a trade with the expansion Lehigh Valley Steam for the Steam’s No. 6 overall pick in the draft, plus the Steam’s No. 1 pick in 2000. Bueso, from Lindsay Wilson College, scored 70 goals in his 90-game collegiate career, and was the catalyst for Lindsay Wilson’s NAIA national championship teams in 1995 and 1996. A second A-League expansion franchise, the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, chose Dartmouth goalkeeper Matt Nyman, who holds the school record for shutouts. Another goalkeeper, Virginia’s Brock Yetso, was chosen third overall by the expansion Maryland Mania. Twenty players in the A-League draft were also selected by Major League Soccer earlier in the day. MLS has first option on the players, and if the player is not signed by MLS within a specified time period, the player then goes to the A-League team, which has two weeks to sign the player.
