Striker Roberto Gaucho, one of Brazil’s most consistent goalscorers for more than 10 seasons, has signed with Major League Soccer and will play for the Miami Fusion. The 5-foot-11, 175-pound striker is expected to join training camp by Feb. 20. He will be introduced to the media at a news conference after his arrival. Roberto Gaucho, 30, spent the last six years with Cruzeiro Esporte Clube of Brazil’s First Division, scoring 97 goals – including one in Cruzeiro’s 2-1 victory over Palmieras in the 1996 Brazilian Cup final. In his career, he also won two other Brazilian Cups – one with Gremio in 1988 and one with Cruzeiro in 1993 – and the prestigious Copa Libertadores with Cruzeiro. Prior to joining Cruzeiro in 1992, Roberto Gaucho played for various Brazilian clubs, including Gremio, Coritiba, Vitoria, Bahia, Vasco da Gama and Guarani de Campinas. In 1995, he was loaned for three-months to Huracan of Argentina’s First Division. In all, he has recorded more than 150 career goals. According to Fusion Head Coach Ivo Wortmann, the left-footed forward will lend his veteran presence playing alongside Diego Serna, the Fusion’s right-footed forward who led the team in scoring last season with 11 goals. “We are lucky to get a guy of his level; it’s unbelievable,” said Wortmann, who in the past has stated that his goal was to find foreign players who will help make his American players better. “I saw him play in Brazil and I spoke to many coaches about him. He’s a winner and a goal scorer. He’s a great finisher with a tremendous free kick and a good attitude.” Roberto Gaucho, who will move to South Florida with his wife Heloisa and his five year-old son Robertinho, says he looking forward to playing in the MLS. “It’s an honor for me to come to the United States,” he said. “I’ve won just about every championship I could at every level here in Brazil, and this is my opportunity to experience a different country and another culture,” said Gaucho. “I know soccer is a new sport in the U.S, and I’m looking forward to bringing to the Fusion the famous Brazilian style of play. I look forward to meeting and exceeding Ivo’s expectations and bringing the Fusion its first championship.”
