Midfielder Tony Sanneh has agreed to a deal with German Bundesliga club Hertha Berlin and will be leaving D.C. United. “Tony will certainly be greatly missed,” said D.C. United GM Kevin Payne. “He’s been a very important part for us since joining the club early in the 1996 season. Aside from the goals he’s scored in some significant instances, he’s also been a key player contributing in a number of other ways…we wish him all the luck in the world.” Sanneh agreed to a deal with Hertha Berlin that will run through June of 2000, with an option to extend the contract for another season. The German club did not release any other terms. “I’m disappointed because this is a sad day not only for us, but also for Major League Soccer,” said new D.C. coach Thomas Rongen. “It’s difficult to see top quality young players leave this country to play elsewhere. “While he will be missed, we have always found a way to replace players in the past, and we certainly will this time. We will need to be a little more crafty maybe, but we will obviously find a way.”
