The U.S. men’s U-23 national team and the U.S. men’s U-20 national team began their San Diego training camps last week with an impressive 1-1 draw on Jan. 7. The tenacious match was played with bragging rights in mind, and ended even courtesy of goals by Carlos Bocanegra (U-20s) and Joey DiGiamarino (U-23s). The U-23s are training in San Diego through Jan. 18 in preparation for a foreign tour in Spain from Feb. 9-20, but before that will face Germany’s U-21 national team in Jacksonville, Fla., on Feb. 6 and 8. The U-20s will train in San Diego until Jan. 19, when coach Sigi Schmid will select 18 players to compete in the Copa Atlantico (against Germany, Spain, Portugal and Denmark) for a foreign tour through the Canary Islands from Jan. 20-29. The U-20s followed their draw with the U-23s by downing the A-League’s San Diego Flash 3-0 behind goals from Bocanegra, Steve Cherundolo and Jamar Beasley.
