The Indiana Blast will write a new chapter in the state’s professional soccer history in 1999, as the team has been promoted to the A-League. “We’re thrilled,” said MorSports, Inc. President Kim Morris. “This is not only a great accomplishment for us, but also a nice reward for our fans, who will get to see the highest level of soccer outside MLS next summer.” After two years in the D3 League, Indiana was promoted based on its on- and off-the field excellence in 1998: Indiana claimed the D3 Pro League’s North Central Division regular-season championship with a 15-3 record, and placed fourth in the league in average attendance. The USISL bestowed the “Organization of the Year” award on the Blast at its league meetings. “It will be a challenge, but I feel we can compete at the next level,” said Blast coach Jimmy McDonald, who has recorded a 30-17 record in two years at the helm. “We’ll be looking to bring back the players who were the keys to our team last year, and add some new talent to keep us a winning club.” Pittsburgh changes nickname Pittsburgh has changed its team nickname from the Riverdogs to the Riverhounds. Team GM Dave Kasper said the change was necessary due to a license of the name Riverdogs by a Single-A baseball team in Charleston, S.C. “Given the large number of teams who share the same name in sports, we didn’t anticipate a conflict,” said Kasper. “We plan on distinguishing ourselves in the future, and the only way to do so is to change our name….we are pleased to have a nickname that stands alone in professional sports, yet keeps a strong Pittsburgh identity.” Both Pittsburgh and Indiana will begin their first season of play in the A-League in April of 1999.
