The U.S. Pro-40 Select team made a superb start to its tour of England with a 3-0 shutout of Manchester United’s reserve team on Dec. 5. Midfielders Steve Jolley (Los Angeles Galaxy), Judah Cooks (D.C. United) and Ross Paule (Colorado Rapids) each scored goals as the Project-40 squad dismantled Manchester United’s reserves at the Manchester United Training Grounds Saturday. Jolley started the scoring in the 37th minute when he slotted the ball from six yards out past a diving Manchester United goalkeeper. Pro-40 Select goalkeeper Matt Napoleon (Miami Fusion) kept the shutout intact in the 40th minute when he stopped a penalty kick to keep the score 1-0 at the half. Manchester United came out strong in the second half, but a stellar performance by Napoleon did not allow United to convert any of its eight shots. The Columbia University product recorded nine saves, six in the final 45 minutes. U.S. Pro-40 Select Head Coach Lothar Osiander’s squad was able to continue its scoring by converting its first shot on goal of the second half in the 82nd minute when Cooks scored from the middle of the six-yard box on a pass from Tony Kuhn (Chicago Fire). A United defender brought down Kuhn in the 88th minute, which lead to a 25-yard free kick from Paule. The 1998 MLS All-Star curled ball into the upper left-hand corner of the goal for the 3-0 victory. The Project-40 team will play four more games in their tour of England.
