Major League Soccer’s remaining five class of ’98 Project-40 players will leave by November 9 for international seasoning with Bayer Leverkusen of the German Bundesliga, Sheffield Wednesday of England’s Premier League, Santos of Brazil and a nine-day tour of Mexico with the Dallas Burn. Columbus Crew defender Ubusuku Abukusumo and D.C. United midfielder Judah Cooks will train with Sheffield Wednesday for more than three weeks, while Los Angeles midfielder Jose Botello joins MLS’s Dallas Burn in Guadalajara, Mexico, for a three to four game tour against teams from Mexico’s Division I and Primera A until November 17. San Jose Clash goalkeeper Andy Kirk will join the trio of Project-40 members Brian Dunseth (New England Revolution), Chad McCarty (Tampa Bay Mutiny) and Matt Napoleon (Miami Fusion) at Leverkusen. Kansas City Wizards midfielder Nino DaSilva will train with legendary club Santos of Brazil. “It is always good to be able to compare your game to other pro teams outside MLS and see how you need to improve,” said Abukusumo. “I hope that the training with Wednesday and the games with U.S. Pro-40 give me an edge for making the Olympic Team.” The Project-40 players and U.S. Pro-40 Head Coach Lothar Osiander will meet in Manchester, England on December 2 for a five-match tour against other Division I reserve teams in England. The players will return home on December 20.
