Building on its tradition of bringing top international teams to Spartan Stadium, the San Jose Clash will play Deportivo Toluca, reigning champion of the Mexican First Division, on Wednesday, Nov. 18. The match will kick off at 7:30 p.m., PT. “In our first three seasons, we’ve played games in San Jose against two of the most famous teams in Europe, Bayer Leverkusen (Germany) and Aston Villa (England), and three of the best teams in Mexico (UNAM Pumas, Atlas and Morelia),” Bridgwater said. “But I’m not sure we’ve played anyone playing as well as Toluca is right now.” The Diablos Rojos of Toluca captured Mexico’s 1998 Torneo Verano championship, defeating Necaxa in the final game. In the currrent Torneo Invierno, Toluca has gone undefeated in 14 games following a season-opening loss. With a 9-1-5 record, Coach Enrique Meza’s team is in first place in Group 4. Toluca has outscored its opponents 34-13. Leading scorer Jose Cardozo has nine goals, teammate Fabian Estay has five, and Meza has put together the best defense in Mexico, led by goalkeeper Hernan Cristante and defenders such as Omar Blanco and Alberto Macias. “Toluca will be a tremendous test for us,” said Clash Coach Brian Quinn, who plans to augment his roster with “guest stars” from several other Major League Soccer teams. “I think we’ll be able to put together an exciting side for what should be a very competitive, very entertaining game.” For ticket information, fans are encouraged to call (408) 985-GOAL.
