The New England Revolution selected midfielders Shawn Medved and Kris Kelderman, both of whom won the inaugural MLS Championship in 1996 with D.C. United, in today’s MLS waiver draft. San Jose, Tampa Bay and Colorado also participated in today’s draft, while the other eight organizations passed on the remaining players waived last Saturday. After the Revolution picked Medved with the top overall pick, the Kansas City Wizards passed, enabling the San Jose Clash to claim defender Joey Martinez, waived by the Miami Fusion after spending the 1997 season with the Dallas Burn. The Tampa Bay Mutiny then selected former San Jose Clash forward Harut Karapetyan, who spent the majority of his three-year MLS career with the Los Angeles Galaxy. After Miami, Dallas and the MetroStars passed, the Colorado Rapids claimed goalkeeper Garth Lagerwey, a three-year MLS veteran of the Dallas Burn and Kansas City Wizards. Following passes by Columbus, Los Angeles, D.C. United and MLS Cup ’98 champion Chicago Fire, New England selected Kelderman, who won two Cups with United before joining the Miami Fusion for its inaugural campaign. Two other players will not return to MLS in 1999, San Jose has announced that it is in the process of selling Mexican forward Francisco Uribe to a Mexican First Division club, while Colorado decided not to pick up the option on Peruvian forward Waldir Saenz’s contract.
