It was seen as a major coup when Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson secured the services of former Sweden, Celtic and Barcelona star Henrik Larsson in an offseason loan deal late last year, but the BBC reports that Helsingborg, the player’s Swedish employer, may be willing to extend the 35-year old striker’s deal past the originally-agreed-upon March 12 deadline. Larsson scored in his Manchester United debut on Sunday, sparking all kinds of speculation that he could see out the end of the season in a Man United shirt. March 12 was the original deadline because that’s the day the Swedish league resumes play for its new season. Having only just made his debut, Larsson dismissed the speculation: “It is a three-month loan deal and I have to be back when the Swedish league starts, so I don’t think it is going to happen.” His comments were later backed up by Ferguson: “It is very simple. He shall be back on 12 March. That is what we have in the contract between the two clubs. Nothing else has been discussed.” Helsingborg, meanwhile, has taken the stance that Larsson is theirs if United can come up with the right offer. “If they come with an offer, then I will listen,” Helsingborg president Sten-Inge Fredin told BBC Five Live, though he stressed that he was unwilling to completely let the player go. “I will have to talk to Henrik and then we have to sit down and see if this question is coming up,” Fredin added. Larsson being 35, United wouldn’t want to transfer him anyhow, but a six-month loan deal wouldn’t be out of the question, especially if Larsson continues to score goals.
