U.S. women’s national team and University of Florida forward Danielle Fotopoulos broke the NCAA Division I goal scoring record Oct. 18, tallying a hat trick in front of 1,014 as the Gators decimated SEC rival Mississippi 9-1. With the three strikes, Fotopoulos upped her career total to 106 goals, surpassing the old mark of 103 that was shared by Mia Hamm of North Carolina (1989-90 and 1992-93) and Tiffeny Milbrett of Portland (1990-2, 1994). The record 104th goal came on a header into the lower left corner with under a minute to play in the first half. “It was Danielle’s day,” said Florida coach Becky Burleigh. “It was exciting, it was a piece of history.” Said Fotopoulos: “I think I had so many emotions, I didn’t know what to do. I couldn’t remember how it happened until halftime and everybody told me. I’m just glad the pressure is off and the team can move on.” Through 15 games this season, Fotopoulos already has 20 goals, and stands to put the record out of reach. Florida, 14-1, has four regular season matches left, plus the SEC Tournament and NCAA playoffs. Fotopoulos was the leading scorer in the nation in both 1995 and 1996, scoring 32 goals as a sophomore at Southern Methodist University before transferring to Florida, where she tallied 34 goals as a junior. She sat out what would have been her senior season last year while recovering from a serious knee injury, but has come back strong. Fotopoulos made her debut with the U.S. women’s national team in January of 1996 and has since earned nine caps and scored four goals for the USA. She will be battling for a spot on the 1999 U.S. Women’s World Cup team next year.
