The MLS SuperDraft is this Friday in Indianapolis, and Frank Giase of the Newark Star-Ledger says the New York Red Bulls can’t afford to be too picky this year. Last year was perhaps something of an anomaly: not only did the then-MetroStars walk away with No. 1 draft pick Marvell Wynne from UCLA, but they also picked up 16-year old sensation Josmer Altidore in the second round. The speedy Wynne became a regular on the Metrostar right side, starting 23 of 28 games, while Altidore emerged late in the season to score several crucial goals for Bruce Arena. Don’t expect the Bulls to be so lucky this year. Says Giase: “When Bruce Arena took over as Red Bulls coach on July 18, he didn’t just inherit a flawed roster. He also was left without a key draft pick this year to begin the rebuilding process, a one-two punch courtesy of the short but ineffective Alexi Lalas-Mo Johnston regime.” Bruce knows the pickings will be slim, thanks to the team’s forefathers: “In our case, we’re not blessed with a lot of picks, so you have to be smart. We won’t get the best players here. Those draft picks were traded away for a variety of reasons, so we’re a little hampered.” The Red Bulls have picks 19 and 33, in the second and third rounds, respectively. Meanwhile, Bruce and co. have spent the offseason clearing salary cap room through waivers, retirements and trades, like sending Amado Guevara to Chivas USA.
