After the L.A. Galaxy fell, 3-2, at home to the New England Revolution on Saturday, it became evident that the Galaxicos need to bolster their squad before David Beckham arrives in July. Grahame L. Jones of the Los Angeles Times says he’s heard whisperings that former Portugal international defender Abel Xavier, who’s now out of contract, could be on his way to L.A. and so too could FC Dallas’ Guatemalan striker, Carlos Ruiz, himself a former Galaxy player.

In exchange for Ruiz, L.A. might have to give up right-back Chris Albright — hence the need for Xavier — and possibly Nate Jaqua, who’s failed to live up to his billing as a goal-getter so far this season. Ruiz was a big-time fan favorite in his time at the Galaxy, scoring an impressive 50 goals in 69 games for the Galaxy when he was traded to Dallas in 2005.

After Saturday’s defeat, Coach Frank Yallop said L.A. wouldn’t discount the possibility of a future trade. “We’re always thinking about it,” he said. “We know there are areas we need to get better at…. There are always chances of doing that, sure.”
