Real Madrid has made it clear that it wants to be rid of Ronaldo. In the last two seasons the Brazilian striker has looked a pale shadow of his former self: overweight, often injured, and at times looking absolutely disinterested. Spanish paper La Marca claimed he has two offers on the table, one from Saudi Arabian side Al-Ittihad, the club Luis Figo will be joining at the end of the summer, and another from a European side. The report also claims that Fabio Capello would like to offload Ronaldo before the transfer window closes at the end of the month. Earlier today, a separate report from ESPN Radio said that Ronaldo will be unveiled next week with the New York Red Bulls as MLS’s second major signing, although that report hasn’t been echoed anywhere else as yet. On Monday, Capello will meet with sporting director Pedrag Mijatovic, president Ramon Calderon and technical secretary Franco Baldini to discuss how best to sort out the club’s future after Real lost three of its last four games in La Liga. It could be that Ronaldo will become the first of the departing trio of himself, David Beckham and Antonio Cassano to leave the Bernabeu. While no one at Real has openly criticized the trio, the fact that each of them were omitted from today’s Copa del Rey clash with Real Betis is a sign that the club’s insistence on staying with the old guard is at least partly to blame for its poor form. Ronaldo’s contract with Real runs out in 2008 but the Spanish giant is already building for the future by bringing in new blood like River Plate striker Gonzalo Higuain.
