FC Dallas is wasting no time following the announcement that David Beckham will join the L.A. Galaxy this summer. Michael Hitchcock, the club’s president and general manager, told the Dallas Morning News that the club is negotiating with English club Tottenham to bring Dutch midfielder Edgar Davids to the club, as its “designated player,” which Beckham will be for the Galaxy. Hitchocck said he wants Davids to visit Pizza Hut Park before making a decision, though the contract negotiations face a deadline of Jan. 31, when the transfer window closes in Europe. Davids could become one of many fading international stars hoping to walk off into the sunset with a golden payday now that MLS is parading around its new “designated player” rule, which would allow them to earn enormous salaries-tens of times greater than their would-be teammates. Indeed, reports claim that Real Madrid misfit Ronaldo could be unveiled in New York next week, while Luis Figo could be tempted to move over after his six-month stint in Saudi Arabia. There have even been reports that MLS is in protracted negotiations to coax France legend Zinedine Zidane out of retirement. Tottenham, meanwhile, has confirmed FC Dallas’s interest in Davids, himself a living legend in his time as an international and with Ajax and Juventus. The tough midfielder has spent the majority of this season on the bench. “We definitely have come a long way,” FC Dallas coach Morrow said of the negotiations. “But by no means we have reached an agreement.”
