Finally, in non-Beckham-related (sort of) MLS news, expansion team Toronto FC said it’s sold more than 10,000 season tickets months for its debut season. That’s exactly half of the available seats at the new 20,000-capacity BMO Field, which is scheduled to open just in time for the club’s April 28 home opener against Kansas City. Club officials said construction is about “80 percent” complete and slightly ahead of schedule. The turf will actually be laid in March. After the Beckham announcement, the club says 2,600 season tickets were sold immediately. “Before the David Beckham announcement, we were doing real well,” said Tom Anselmi, the chief operating officer of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment. “Obviously, these last couple days it’s been a real shot in the arm.” Last Friday, Toronto selected former University of Maryland All-American defensive midfielder Maurice Edu as the No. 1 overall pick in the MLS SuperDraft, an event that was overshadowed by the news that David Beckham had signed a record deal with the Los Angeles Galaxy. The signing of Edu was lauded in the soccer press as good move for the expansion club, which still needs to fill 12 of the 28 spots on its roster.
