The backlash in Spain against Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon and his coach, Fabio Capello, must have been much bigger than either one expected, as both Calderon and Capello seem to have been forced into semi-180-degree turnarounds from their previous statements regarding David Beckham’s move to the Los Angeles Galaxy. Three days after proclaiming, “He will train with us but he’s not going to play,” Capello seemed to have relented with regard to his Beckham policy, saying, “You can’t discard anything. At the moment, this is the line we have decided to follow but you have to be flexible. He is a great professional and always shows enthusiasm in training. Ideas can be changed, but it will depend on both the player and the coach.” Capello was widely criticized by both the media as well as his peers for the harsh stance he and president Calderon took with Beckham after the player announced his decision to move to MLS at the end of the season. But Capello’s sudden change of heart may have more to do with the fact that he’s suddenly faced with a bit of an injury crisis: Guti, Marcelo, Roberto Carlos, Raul and Emerson are all out injured, with the latter two likely to be sidelined for more than a month with muscle tears. Meanwhile Beckham, Ronaldo and Antonio Cassano were once again left out of the Real squad for Thursday’s Copa del Rey match at home to Real Betis.
