The Salt Lake Tribune fears that Freddy Adu’s spectacular performances at the FIFA Under-20 World Cup could hasten his departure from Real Salt Lake. Freddy has been one of the tournament’s best performers, recording three goals and an assist in three games. And while he did not score in the Americans’ 2-1 victory against Brazil, most believe that his passing, close control and tenacity made the difference.

Even Brazil coach Nelson Rodrigues was impressed: “Adu is a very special footballer with the kind of ability you see usually only in South American players,” Rodrigues said. “He showed the efficiency that we were lacking.” That kind of endorsement is likely to make the global soccer world sit up and take notice.

Adu, meanwhile, has made no secret of the fact that he covets a move abroad, preferably to one of Europe’s bigger clubs. Some believe the 18-year-old will seek a move away as early as this winter. Indeed, his performances may have already generated enough interest, but if he leads the U.S. much further into the tournament, RSL shouldn’t expect Freddy to stick around for long-which could be beneficial to RSL, especially when you consider the youngster’s performances this season, the club’s league-worst record, and the prospect of a hefty transfer fee.
