No. 5 Virginia had to settle for a 1-1 tie with No. 22 Florida State at home in an ACC women’s match.
Holly Peltzer‘s goal for the Seminoles in the 18th minute snapped Virginia’ shutout streak at a record 783 minutes, but the Cavs recovered to equalize on Sarah Senty‘s goal in the 53rd minute. Virginia dominated the second half, outshooting FSU, 10-0.
“Overall, I thought that was the most minutes of quality soccer we played all season,” said Cavs coach Steve Swanson. “I knew the first goal would be critical and to give it up against the run of play was disappointing. We had to chase the game for a while, but once we tied it we had control. We kept knocking on the door but couldn’t put one in. They didn’t get a shot after halftime, but unfortunately we gave up the early goal.”
Florida State coach Mark Krikorian was just happy to escape Charlottesville with a draw.
“It was a great result on the road for our team when you consider all the circumstances,” said head coach Mark Krikorian. “At different times this evening we had six, seven freshmen on the field playing against a quality opponent like Virginia. I am thrilled that we were able to battle and hang in there and compete at the level that we did.”
FSU’s Dutch star, Kirsten van de Ven, was suspended, and former U.S. U-20 Sarah Wagenfuhr was out with a knee sprain.
OKLAHOMA STATE-TEXAS A&M (1-2). Ashlee Pistorius tied the Big 12 record with her 69th career goal and had an assist on Nicole Ketchum‘s winning goal for the No. 16 Aggies, who can back from one goal down with 20 minutes to play on the road. Jamie Markaverich had given the No. 23 Cowgirls the lead in the 9th minute.
BYU-UTAH STATE (2-1). More heroics from Katie Larkin rescued the No 17 Cougars. Larkin won the game with her eighth game-winning goal of the season for BYU, which improved to 9-0-2 with the win.
MICHIGAN-INDIANA (1-1). The No. 25 Hoosiers ran their unbeaten streak to 10 games with the tie. They got a first-half goal from Lindsay McCarthy to improve to 8-1-2 (2-0-1 in the Big Ten).
