Inter Milan owner Massimo Moratti on Wednesday expressed his concern about whether Champions League matches would be open to fans at the San Siro if the special cabinet that’s convened to assess the safety of Italian stadiums deems the Milan stadium unsafe. “We will see, we will have to face one problem at a time,” the Nerazzurri owner said. Milan sports councilor Gionvanni Terzi said he was optimistic the San Siro, which Inter and AC Milan share, wouldn’t be empty when the Nerazzurri host Valencia on Feb 21. “The San Siro is a safe venue and UEFA has also confirmed this. We have agreed to new measures which will further improve security at the stadium.”
Despite his optimism, the San Siro, also known as the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, could be closed for the immediate future when the cabinet delivers its verdict later in the day. Italy’s sports minister, Giovanna Melandri, has reiterated that only stadiums that satisfy the new standards would be permitted fan entry. The matter came to a head last Friday after rioting left one killed and several others wounded during the Sicilian derby between Catania and Palermo.
