The New England Revolution has received a $1.675 million bid from English second division club Preston North End for Taylor Twellman, Boston Globe writer Frank Dell’Apa reports, citing an unnamed source. Major League Soccer, which owns its players’ contracts, has declined the offer, but Preston may raise the offer to $2 million. “Taylor just re-signed a long-term contract with the league, so it would have to be a situation where it made sense for everyone,” said Mike Burns, the Revolution’s director of soccer. “But we are not looking to lose Taylor. It would be very difficult to replace him.”
Prior to the start of last season, New England turned down a $1 million offer for Twellman from Norwegian club Odd Grenland, before offering him a new four-year contract worth $370,000 annually. The 27-year-old is New England’s all-time leading scorer with 101 goals in 177 games in Major League Soccer.
Preston’s bid comes just a week after Scottish side St. Mirren swooped in with a lucrative offer that former Revs playmaker Andy Dorman couldn’t refuse. Preston is last in the Coca-Cola Championship club with a 6-14-6 record, three points out of the relegation zone. Preston has been in the English second division for eight years.
