Ruud Gullit’s Los Angeles Galaxy opened preseason training on Monday, and the Associated Press was on hand to interview — who else — star midfielder David Beckham. Asked what he wanted most this season, Becks responded, “To win something … We can’t afford to be in the position we were in, where we ended up chasing it,” the former England captain said. “That’s not good for the players or for a team. We’ve got to get it right from the first game and carry on right through the season.”
L.A. finished a disappointing fifth in the six-team Western Conference last season, missing out on the playoffs thanks to a loss away to Chicago on the last day of the MLS season. Personally, it was a very frustrating year for Beckham, who arrived in MLS with an injured left ankle, only to sprain his right knee a month and a half later.
“Hopefully, I’ll stay a lot more fit than I was last year,” said Beckham, who spent the last month training with EPL giant Arsenal. “I’m just looking forward to this season. It’s a fresh start for us; it’s exciting.
