Chivas USA, as ever, is on the lookout for a high-profile Mexican player to add to its roster. The Los Angeles club so far has only two — defender Claudio Suarez and midfielder Francisco Mendoza — but CEO Shawn Hunter tells the Los Angeles Times that Chivas may be getting ready to bring in a big name, a really big name, to rival the likes of David Beckham and Cuauhtemoc Blanco.
The only problem is that big names require a designated player slot, something Chivas traded away last year in exchange for Honduran midfielder Amado Guevara (who’s now at Toronto FC). That means Chivas will have to trade to acquire a new one. “We will only add a DP if it makes us better on the field, gets our fans excited and helps us sell tickets,” Hunter said.
Chivas USA coach Preki says that before the club trades for a slot, it will have to find a player. That player will have to have some kind of association with the Mexican league, preferably a Mexican international. Chivas de Guadalajara (Chivas USA’s parent) forward Omar Bravo is top of the wish list, but he seems focused on a move to Europe. Another on the list is Jaguares forward Adolfo “Bofo” Bautista, who Chivas made a move for earlier in the year. A source says they will do so again once the MLS international transfer window opens on June 15.
