Everyone knows Jorge Flores as Sueno. Now he’s a budding MLS star. Only a year after winning the “Sueno MLS,” beating out thousands of young players for the right to try out with Chivas USA, Flores has broken into the first team and scored goals in his last three games — all wins for Chivas USA.
Flores was doing maintenance work for his step-father at a church when he entered the made-for-TV contest broadcast on Univision’s “Republica Deportiva.” He is still only making $17,000 on an MLS development contract, but he is now a national soccer celebrity, having played — well — for the U.S. U-20s on their recent trip to England.
“I told him to buy lottery tickets,” Chivas forward Ante Razov said Saturday night after Flores’s third goal. After Mexican star Claudio Suarez spotted reporters and cameramen interviewing Flores, he said, “Sueno, they’re going to make a movie out of you.”
