David Beckham will be sidelined for at least a month after damaging the lateral ligament in his right knee on Saturday in Real Madrid’s Spanish league game against Getafe.
A spokesman for Beckham said the former England captain would be out for 4-6 weeks after suffering a strain to the ligament. Beckham will not only miss the return leg of Real’s Champions League series against Bayern Munich on Wednesday but also Saturday’s clash against archrival Barcelona at the Nou Camp as well as at least another four La Liga games.
If Real manages to beat Bayern, the 31-year-old Englishman could be available for the return leg of the Champions League quarterfinals.
News of Beckham’s injury sent a scare through the offices of the Los Angeles Galaxy, which he will join in July.
“We do not expect this injury to affect his arrival in Los Angeles or his debut with the Galaxy,” Galaxy president Alexi Lalas said Sunday night.
