[TRANSFER TALK] Brazilian Jo may be in the doghouse of Brazilian national team coach Dunga, but he's certainly a hot commodity on the international transfer market, as reflected by the $36 million it's believed Manchester City paid CSKA Moscow to acquire the 21-year-old striker.
While at CSKA Moscow, Jo became a fan favorite, scoring 44 goals in 77 appearances. He also helped his side capture a Russian League title, a Russian Cup and two Russian Super Cups.
Jo, whose full name is Joao Alves de Assis Silva, is Manchester City manager Mark Hughes' first signing. The City boss, who joined the club in June from Blackburn, had high praise for the club's new forward.
"He's a big talent and a young man with a big future," he said. "A lot has been said about him and there was an expectation on him coming out of Brazil, so with the success he's had, I think it's a real coup that we've been able to bring him to the club."
Jo has earned just one national team cap with Brazil. The forward has not been picked since a public falling out with Dunga.
Jo gushed at the opportunity to push Manchester City into the Premier League elite.
"I decided to come to Manchester City because it is one of the clubs who showed more interest in me, although I had other offers as well. I was told Manchester City is a club going forward at the moment. We can go places, that is our objective. We thought about it and I decided to come to Manchester City for that reason."
The arrival of the 6-foot-3 marksman who has one cap for Brazil signals the beginning of what Hughes hopes to be a busy transfer season.
"We've given notice of intent," the Welshman said. "We want to push the club forward and raise the profile. The acquisition of quality players will obviously help that and the arrival of Jo is the start of the process."
One of the biggest names Hughes is hoping to attract is another Brazilian, Ronaldinho.
The 28-year-old superstar is coming off a disappointing season at Barcelona and has been in talks with Manchester City about a possible move to the Premier League club. Hughes remains optimistic.
"In the discussions he's had with the club," Hughes said, "I think he's been very positive about the idea of coming here."
In addition to Jo, Brazilians Geovanni and Elano also ply their trade with the club.
