After being knocked out of the U.S. Open Cup by third-tier Crystal Palace Baltimore, the New York Red Bulls celebrated Independence Day with a 4-0 lashing at the Colorado Rapids. Coach Juan Carlos Osorio knew exactly where to place the blame — on the players. And he warned them that once the transfer window opens July 15, they may well be history.

“We were not at the races,” he told Geoffrey Urland. “We didn’t compete today and at the end we got what we deserved. We just wanted to match them up and play the same system that we have been doing. That’s down to the players and I do not think that anyone can look in my eyes and tell me that they really played today.”

Asked what he had told his players at halftime, Osorio replied: “You don’t want to know.” By the time the final whistle completed a miserable week, the coach strongly implied that major changes would be on the way. “I can’t wait for the 15th of July, when we can sign some players and make a very competitive team,” he said. “Because at the moment, I think all of our players have had the chance to shine and stake a claim and a lot of them refuse to do that.”
