The ligament injury that will now keep David Beckham out of Real Madrid’s lineup for more than a month brings to mind an interesting point: is MLS insured? Of course is the answer, though the league wouldn’t reveal the extent of its insurance policy. Incidentally, Becks is also insured, to the tune of $193 million, according to a New York Daily News report. You can bet the league’s policy isn’t that much.
Now then, what about Anschutz Entertainment Group, the company that the orchestrated Beckham deal? AEG is also footing the majority of the bill for Beckham’s reported $27.5 million salary over five seasons, but the company wouldn’t comment on whether it had taken out an insurance policy. In Europe, it’s common practice to take out a policy on big-name signings. Some teams have been known to pay premiums upwards of $100,000 annually, according to the Daily News report
