The San Jose Quakes have joined Toronto FC in the quest to sign former Norwich City, Leeds United and Manchester City forward Darren Huckerby in an attempt to solve its striking woes. Coach Frank Yallop doesn’t want to panic (which is good, because panic doesn’t tend to win games), but said: “We want to get players in. The team needs a little bit of stimulus and a little bit of change. I owe it to the team to bring them in.”
Huckerby visited the club this week and Yallop thought “he liked the general atmosphere here and the look of the team. Obviously the thing that is missing is the thing he’s going to bring to a team — exciting dynamic forward play.” Now the team is “just waiting to hear back.” Regardless, Yallop said the team needs to sign two strikers once the transfer window opens July 15.
The Quakes are also still hoping to sign the former Roma and FC Zurich Brazilian midfielder Francisco Lima, “but the deal isn’t complete yet” for the veteran 37-year-old. Yallop said the team is trying to sign a third player whom he wouldn’t identify, except to say that he’s not European (so it’s definitely not Andrei Arshavin or David Villa). Defender Ryan Cochrane and forward Jovan Kirovski are returning from long term injuries and both could be available for Saturday’s home game against the Colorado Rapids.
