L.A. Galaxy President Tim Leiweke has told the team to turn its season around or face the consequences, reports Jonah Freedman on his Inside Soccer blog. He quotes “a source close to Major League Soccer’s glamour franchise” as saying that Leiweke “made an unannounced visit to the team’s locker room this past week and issued a grim ultimatum: Get things on the right track in the next two weeks or there will be dire consequences.”
Freedman speculates on what those consequences might be. “Canning head coach Ruud Gullit? Cleaning house, perhaps starting with Landon Donovan? Firing team president and GM Alexi Lalas? If I were a betting man, I’d say all three are possibilities, in increasing order of their likelihood.”
Gullit and Lalas are reportedly not the best of friends, and Donovan is rumored to be thinking about a possible third stab at playing in Europe. There’s also speculation that the David Beckham camp is “calling more of the shots within the organization.” Possibly rubbing his hands along with the rest of us, Freedman concludes: “Keep watching, because the dysfunction may get worse before it gets better.”
