[OFF THE POST] Mark McGregor‘s career appeared to be over. Released by League Two club Port Vale in April, the 31-year-old failed to impress during a trial with Mansfield and was looking at a bleak, club-less future.

Desperate to find a new team, McGregor started a group on Facebook, asking its members to "help macca find a new football club."

The grassroots effort was a success as Blue Square Premier side Altrincham signed McGregor to a contract. Manager Graham Heathcote cited McGregor’s time with Wrexham, Blackpool, and Burnley as the defining factor in the club’s decision

"I signed him on experience alone. Look where he’s been," Heathcote said.
