Toronto FC owner Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment has given the team the go-ahead to sign a designated player. But, as Morgan Campbell reports, “that doesn’t mean they’re going to do it.”
The team’s entire 2009 business plan was approved by the MLSE board of directors at an all-day meeting Monday. But TFC Chief Operating Officer Tom Anselmi said the team is still in no rush to sign a designated player.
“We’re being very cautious about it,” said Anselmi. “It may or may not happen.” The important thing is that if TFC’s Director of Soccer Mo Johnston finds the right player at the right price, then nobody at MLSE will stop the deal. Coach John Carver spoke several times in favor of signing a DP toward the end of the 2008 season.
