L.A. Galaxy midfielder David Beckham, currently on loan to AC Milan, is now maintaining that his move to Italy was not solely motivated by a desire to keep his place in the England squad. Apparently, it’s always been one of his ambitions to play in the country.

“I didn’t join Milan just for that reason, to play in Europe and make myself available for England selection,” he told a news conference. “I have never played in Italy and I think it’s one of the best leagues in the world, I want to concentrate on working with the team. I know the kind of team Milan is, the professionalism that exists, and I am willing to work really hard for my place in the squad.”

And we thought it was all so that he could be super-fit in time for the next Major League Soccer season. Not that Beckham has been having second thoughts about the wisdom of that move. “I always try to have no regrets in life, or in my career,” he said, joining a club that includes the whole of humanity. “I made the decision to go to L.A. two years ago and I’ve had a good time there. Now I have this chance to play for one of the biggest clubs in the whole world.” Next stop, Barcelona?
