Fresh from a 3-0 home win over FC Dallas, the New York Red Bulls could be in for some more good news if Aston Villa striker Juan Pablo Angel is added to the club’s roster, as many expect. An unnamed source told Big Apple Soccer that the transfer has been completed, although once again the Red Bulls would neither confirm nor deny that the transfer has taken place. The deal, details of which were leaked on Friday, could be announced as early as today, although as of 3 PM EST, there was still no word from Red Bull.
The same sources told the New York area site that a salary had been agreed between the parties, and that Red Bull would not have to pay a transfer fee since Aston Villa, his current employer, won’t have to pay 31-year-old the final year of his contract. After yesterday’s win, Red Bulls coach Bruce Arena said there was “a possibility” the team would be adding another striker. The Red Bulls have been courting the unhappy Angel now for several months. Angel joined Aston Villa from Argentine powerhouse River Plate in 2000 for a club record $18.8 million. He scored 59 goals in 152 matches for the Birmingham club.
